palestinians now dead as israel continues to launch those air strikes. overnight air strikes marking the deadliest attack yet in that region overnight. three chipper and at least two adults are dead and 42 more injured after two houses and a national security compound were bombed in gaza city. israel says it is now targeting hamas militants. at least three israeli civilians have died from palestinian rocket fire compared to at least 50 palestinian civilians. that's largely because of israel's iron dome here. this is a defense system that actually intercepts rockets. now, global leaders calling for an end to all of this violence, but hamas and israel have very different terms set out for a truce. we will have much more on that global reaction coming up for you in a live report happening at 6:30. >>> also new this morning, a landmark presidential visit is under way today. president obama is now the first sitting u.s. president to visit myanmar, also known as berma. during his speech at the university, the president encouraged the country to continue its transition to democracy after 49

the prospect of a war in the middle east as israel and palestinian militants get closer to the brink this weekend. israel expanding its air assault against hamas and palestinian militants continuing to fire rockets into civilian areas of southern israel. that's where i want to begin this morning. i've got nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell and "new york times" columnist tom friedman. who better to have to discuss this. tom, as the two sides get closer to the brink, based on your experience and reporting, where is this going? >> let's just go around the horn, david, quickly. i think hamas is trying to use this moment to both break out of the blockade and try to end targeted killing of its leaders from israel, and trying to take advantage of the new arab spring balance of power, the muslim brotherhood in egypt, to leverage that possibility. israel. israel has been watching for the last six to nine months hamas bringing in longer and longer range missiles from iran. i think they saw this as an opportunity of necessity to take those out, missiles that can now hit t

deadly violence in the middle east overnight between israel and hamas. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in gaza this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt, it is not a good time to be a hamas military leader on the strip. they are being systematically picked off, killed in their homes, in cars, on motorcycles, many have gone into hiding, turning off cell phones, avoiding all usual locations. israel's war to stop hamas' rockets continued. with 100 strikes in the air and from the sea. hamas is still able to launch homemade, iranian made rockets towards southern israel and tel aviv. there were around 40 new launches today. not all are hitting their mark because in israel there's a new national hero, the mobile iron dome defense system, proving to be the most effective of its kind in the world. of the thousand rockets israel says hamas fired in the last six days, about a third have been intercepted by the iron dome. in gaza, there are no air defenses at all, and israel appears to have superb intelligence, locating and destroying individual hamas home
